At The Art Center of Dover

The Art Center is pleased to present Somewhere Familiar, a solo exhibition of recent plein air works by regional artist and Art Center member Charlie Wemyss, on view from July 7 through August 30, 2025.

Charlie's evocative oil paintings capture the familiar beauty of New England with a timeless, impressionistic touch. Each piece in this exhibition was painted en plein air, bringing an immediacy and intimacy to scenes of marshes, ocean shores, village streets, and quiet rural landscapes. His ability to translate fleeting light and mood onto canvas invites viewers to pause and reconnect with places that feel both personal and universal.

Wemyss first studied oil and watercolor painting under Mark Potter for four years in high school. After a 40-year hiatus, he resumed his artistic practice in 2018, studying under professional artist Sam Vokey. His approach is grounded in the principles of the Boston School of Impressionism, emphasizing draftsmanship, value, and strong compositional design.

Deeply influenced by "The Ten" of the Boston School, Wemyss brings a classical yet fresh eye to the contemporary plein air tradition. Though he also works in the studio on still lifes and cast drawings, this body of work focuses exclusively on his plein air practice—each painting created directly from life in the field.

Charlie is a proud member of The Art Center, and his dedication to refining his technique and sharing his view of the world through paint has earned him recognition as a thoughtful and accomplished artist.
