A Solo Photography Exhibition by Ron St. Jean

The Art Center is proud to present Speak Out!, a compelling solo photography exhibition by photographer Ron St. Jean. On display now through August 31, the exhibition explores the enduring power of civic engagement and the importance of giving voice to deeply held convictions.

Inspired by David Crosby's lyric, "Speak out, you got to speak out against the madness," from the song Long Time Gone, St. Jean's photographs capture moments when ordinary people choose not to remain silent. Written in response to the assassination of Robert Kennedy, Crosby's words continue to resonate today, reminding us that speaking out remains one of the most powerful forms of participation in a democracy.

Through a thoughtful collection of documentary photographs, Speak Out! highlights individuals expressing themselves in many different ways: at peaceful demonstrations, through music, by carrying handmade signs, and simply by showing up. Rather than focusing on a single event or issue, the exhibition reflects the universal act of public expression and the belief that every voice has value.

St. Jean's images are both intimate and expansive, capturing emotion, determination, creativity, and humanity. His photographs invite viewers to pause, observe, and consider the many ways people engage with the world around them. Whether documenting a musician whose songs inspire change, a speaker addressing a crowd, or individuals peacefully gathering in public spaces, each photograph serves as a visual record of people exercising their right to be heard.

Working in both black-and-white and color, St. Jean emphasizes authentic moments over spectacle. His photographs celebrate the diversity of voices that shape our communities while encouraging thoughtful reflection on the role of photography as both witness and storyteller.

Visitors are invited to meet Ron St. Jean during the Artist Reception on Saturday, August 8, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The reception offers an opportunity to view the exhibition, meet the artist, and explore the stories behind the images.

Speak Out! will be on display from July 13 through August 31 at The Art Center, located at 1 Washington Street, Suite 1177, Dover, NH 03820.
