Compelling Visions: A Solo Exhibition by Roland Salazar Rose

Compelling Visions: A Solo Exhibition by Roland Salazar Rose

The Art Center is honored to present Compelling Visions, a solo exhibition featuring the remarkable works of celebrated artist Roland Salazar Rose. This unique showcase highlights paintings from his prolific México years, with select pieces from his Maine collection. The exhibition is on display now through the end of April, with an Artist Reception on Saturday, April 5, from 6-9 PM.

A member of The Art Center and a longtime artist at The Barn Gallery, Roland’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries across the United States and México. With a career spanning decades, his paintings reflect a deep and evolving artistic vision shaped by the landscapes and cultures that have inspired him.

“My art has granted me the opportunity to search for meaning for a life in art,” says Salazar. “Returning to my art full-time in my mature years, I brought to that time the passion that Henry Murger expresses, as those years when climbing the green hillside of youth.”

Salazar’s Mexican works burst with intense colors, reflecting the vibrancy of his second home. Having arrived in México in 1986, first as a seasonal visitor and later as a full-time resident, he found inspiration in the high-altitude light of the region. His ten-year retrospective at the Diego Rivera Museum, Gods, Land, & People of México, stands as a testament to his deep connection with the country and its culture. The majority of this exhibition showcases 15-20 of these vivid and expressive works, emphasizing his unique interpretation of México’s landscapes and cultural essence.

Also included in this exhibition are a few select pieces from Salazar’s Maine collection. These works reflect the state’s natural beauty but with a profoundly introspective approach, capturing the land, sea, and sky in a way that moves beyond traditional landscape painting. While only a small part of the exhibition, these pieces offer a contrast to the intensity of his Mexican series.

At 98 years old, Roland Salazar Rose continues to create, adding to an extraordinary body of work that has left a lasting impact on the art world. His paintings can be explored further online at SalazarGallery.com.

This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience Salazar’s distinct artistic evolution—from México’s vibrant and expressive energy to his introspective interpretations of Maine.

Echoes of the Harbor: by Joe Flaherty

Echoes of the Harbor: by Joe Flaherty

The Art Center presents Echoes of the Harbor, a solo exhibition by resident artist Joe Flaherty, opening on March 10 and running through the end of April.

The harbor deeply influences Joe Flaherty’s artistic vision—the soul of every port city. A place of refuge and adventure, the harbor embodies a unique duality: a haven with guiding lighthouses, safe coves, and wharf structures, as well as a launching point for industrial and pleasure vessels. As a resident of Portsmouth, NH, Flaherty finds endless inspiration in the grit and enchantment of his surroundings.

“I make paintings that aim at being curious, mysterious, and peculiar before they aim at being representational,” says Flaherty. “I try to paint in a way that exhibits the quality of the materials, especially the paint, which I fill with textural elements like sand and marble dust and apply with unusual and sometimes crude tools.”

Flaherty’s bold use of color, texture, and composition invites viewers to engage with his paintings on multiple levels. At a distance, his works intrigue with their vibrant hues and dynamic forms. Upon closer inspection, they reveal intricate layers, inviting exploration and discovery. His approach encourages an immersive experience where textures, patterns, and underpaintings unveil hidden depths.

“I hope my paintings gladden the eye, stimulate the mind, and ultimately lift the spirit,” Flaherty explains. “By conveying different ways of looking at the world—through illumination and the interplay of concealment and revelation—I want to inspire moments of discovery and reflection.”

The Art Center invites art enthusiasts, collectors, and the general public to experience Echoes of the Harbor. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet Joe Flaherty and explore his remarkable work at the artist reception on April 5 from 6-9 pm.
